Ok, maybe a dumb question but, LS3 V8 mated to toyota E153
Discussion
... can it be done? I'm looking at my options for a scratch build and I've been reliably informed that the E153 gearbox from an MR2 Turbo can take 400+ HP. As it will allow for a transverse mounting it sounds like a workable choice for my project, provided it can be mated to a Chevy LS3 V8.
So, is it a stupid idea or not?
Note: The scratch build is mid engined so why not use a mid engined gearbox with cable gearchange, mounting, rations, etc. already sorted? Sounds like a no-brainer to me...

Also check the torque figures. A lot of the Ultima guys are moving into LS power and run the Porsche G50 and Getrac 'boxes (not transverse) with few issues. These big V8's obviously put their power out in a different way to a highly tuned/turbo revvy 4-pot.
Can I ask why uou need to go transverse? I would have though longditudinal (sp?) would open many more options.

The porsche G50 is very heavy and eats up a lot of space. Its also expensive and getting difficult to find (2nd hand). I'll be using a lot of MR2 (turbo) in the car so I'll be getting effectively a free gearbox from the donor. Can I ask why uou need to go transverse? Transverse is fine for me as I'm planning on redesigning the rear subframe to a lot wider track so I can do what I want there. The shorter and more compact the car, the closer to ideal dimensions overall (for me anyway).
I plan on around 400 HP/ tonne, so a 1Te car with a lazy (but light!) V8 in minimal tune seems realistic for my first project.

Would the Toyota V8 be a handier option ?
Its not impossible (I saw some stuff on the Lexus V8 yesterday that looked good). My only concerns are that I can get a new LS3 (crate) for $5K and there are so many tuning shops/ mods available compared to the Lexus/ Toyota V8 that it would have to offer me a lot to change my mind. Also, how heavy is the Toyota V8? The LS3 is suprisingly light.Gassing Station | Engines & Drivetrain | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
