For the first time ever, I took my car out on Sunday for a drive. I didn't have a destination, I didn't have a time limit, I didn't have a companion (the fiancee was at home), I just wanted to drive. It felt brilliant! smile

I didn't do too many miles (about 25 - 30), but these were some of the most fun miles I have driven in a car. When I got back home I had a nice little smile on my face.

I have no idea why it's taken me so long to do this (I'm 31), but I hope to do it again, and again! Maybe it's because my current car is the first 'sporty(ish)' car i've owned. Yes, it's only a Mazda 3 sport (so nothing 'proper' sporty like an MX5, or something specialist like a TVR or Porsche), but previously I had a diesel Astra and a diesel Bora, so it's a new experience for me.

I had slightly damp Lincolnshire country roads, not too much traffic, and I can honestly say I really enjoyed it.

Maybe this thread will attract comments along the lines of 'get a proper sports car, then you'll smile', but i'm happy at the moment. Also, I must state that I fully understand that you don't need a sporty car to have a good hoon, but it helps.

Am I creeping further towards being a proper petrolhead? Or am I still miles away from achieving this? (I hope I get my car back ok. It's having recall work done on the power steering system today at a Mazda dealer).

Oh yes, nearly forgot, the Mazda 2 is a fun little car too. I currently have one as a courtesy car. It's like a go-kart!

P.S Sorry if this sounds like a Mazda appreciation/advertising thread. I just think that the cars they build seem to be quite good fun. Please let me know if anybody disagrees. smile

Best time of year for it. Most of the Sunday driver types stay inside and the scenery is stunning.

You can have fun in any car. Some of the best drives Ive had were in a 1.1 106 with skinny ditchfinders on.

you've been a member for 67 months and only just gone for your "first proper hoon" ?

well fair enough, you should do it more often, 3am is a good time btw, just watch out for the lorry drivers falling asleep at the wheel

Got to done!! If i'm out in the car with the wife, I just can't drive it with any real speed, and I'm never even driving 'that' fast. So, if it's nice and dry and a have a spare couple of hours, I take the S out for a blip. Best time for me is about 6am on a Sunday morning, no other cars about, and if you're lucky, you get a nice sunrise to boot!

p.s yes I am controlled by her!losersmashbiggrin

Yes, i'm usually slow on the uptake with new things.

I used to drive around in my Bora then my Astra thinking I was having fun. But nither of them cars inspired me to just drive them around on a Sunday afternoon. I guess I was a little misled smile.

I have a diesel Focus - didn't stop me giving the lanes a good seeing-to on Saturday lunchtime. Clear skies, rural roads fairly quiet (everyone at the shops), and the car was more than sufficiently entertaining. I do wonder how much more fun an MX-5 woudl be mind driving

OP, for ages i have associated your name with a poster that was some kind of anti-car, bicycle nut. I am assuming that was not you, and now wondering who i have got you mixed up with!

Congrats on your first proper hoon!

I am a bit of a bicycle nut (in the fact that I follow cycling as a sport and I like riding my bicycles) but i'm not at all anti-car. I originally found this forum years ago when I followed a link from CyclingPlus (eermm!). I did get into some debates about speed cameras etc which may have led people to believe I hated cars, but I don't/didn't. I just think that sometimes I say the wrong thing at the wrong time!

Since I visited this site though i've hardly used the CyclingPlus forum. smile

I will get stuck into cycling related debates on here sometimes too, and i'll stick up for cyclists (if they haven't done something stupid like riding without lights at night). However, I do this purely from the perspective of someone who tries to ride and drive in a respectable manner.

Does the Mazda 3 use the Focus chassis? As mentioned in my post, I think you can have fun in any car. I guess that a person's perspective of fun changes with their machinery (i.e. a hoon in MX5 would make me smile even more). My old Bora was ok, but the Astra (in my opinion) really didn't do much for me at all. smile

When I opened this thread I assumed it would be a 17 year who's just passed his test.

Good man !

I'm actually guilty of not enough hoonage. But one of the best was getting up one morning, early on a Saturday and driving over to the EVO triangle and surrounding area. No time restraints, no passenger, just me, the Griff and a whole load of empty roads.

Bliss.

Nothing beats simply driving for the sake of driving.

Says the man who's driven his Elise a total of 800 miles this year and has now parked it up for the winter frown
