Does anyone have any experience with these engines? I'm thinking of building a fast Focus road car. I've heard these engines are good for ~230BHP using standard pistons and rods, and that not many modifications are required to reach this point (~145BHP standard). I have the following changes in mind:
- Exhaust
- Individual throttle bodies
- Camshafts

Would that make the car a pain to drive day-to-day? I'm not sure how the ITBs would affect low-end torque, although the camshafts are obviously going to affect drivability on the road. Any idea how much such a setup would cost?

Thanks.

The Duratec is a pretty tunable modern engine, with decent ports, and a reasonable valve size. I suspect however for 230bhp you'd be looking at bigger intake valves and forged rods/ pistons to withstand the rpm required to make 115bhp/litre. Also an option is the 2.3 bottom end, that is nice in a "heavy" road car to make decent torque.

However, by the time you've done cams, pistons, ITB's, valves, exhaust and aftermarket ecu, you've spent £5k, so you may as well just buy a Mk1 Focus RS, which will also hold it's value well compared to a "tuned" std focus.........

Yeah, buying a car with a turbo such as the Focus RS would probably be more cost-effective! I've also heard of a few supercharged ST170s - not sure how much that would cost though...
