Hi chap,

Nice looking Rolex one word of advice the stainless sports models generally hold their prices better.
Have you check Ian Blowers?

http://www.blowers-jewellers.co.uk/

When I bought my new Rolex sub date back in 1995 at 20 years of age I paid £1870 kept her for 5 years and sold her for £1700 so only a £170 loss, if I'd bought the watch second hand might've made a slight profit.

Hope that helps.

Rolex fair enough, if that's what you fancy but as soon as you put diamonds round it you will simply look like Jermain Defoe.

Try Dom H on here.

I've never dealt with him but many others have and are very happy.

I use my own guy http://www.malcolmgillan.com who i've dealt with for years.

Either will give you sensible advice.

YoungTom, far be it for me a 38 year old; to say to someone turning 21 what is cool or not, but in my opinion diamond encrusted Rolex watches are everything that is bad about Rolex, where as a simple Steel Sub is everything that is good about Rolex.
Also I assume a watch to mark turning 21is a watch you are looking to keep longterm, even for life maybe. I strongly suspect that anything diamond encrusted will not be a watch that you will be wanting to wear in a few years time.

It is your choice mate, but a good watch should be classic, not fashionable.

All the best.

If my money was limitless I would probably get a diamond encrusted Rolex there I said it. But unfortunately it is limited so I went for a more subtle Rolex instead. I got the Explorer II.

Also another thing to bare in mind and I say this as occasionally I have to hang around in some not so savoury areas. But a Rolex attracts attention. A diamond encrusted Rolex will multiply that attraction. If you can honestly say you're the type of person who no one will approach then by all means go for it. If you were the kid who got pushed into the lockers at school and then had your head flushed down the toilet a diamond encrusted watch is probably not for you.

Thanks for this, it is a watch i'll be looking to keep so a Sub is probably the best option. Now just to find one in budget smile

Don't forget to check the non date Subs like the 14060M as they are cheaper to buy.

If money *really* isn't a concern, then why the hell buy Rolex in the first place? Rolex are good at tool watches and they excel at that. Their steel 'sports' models are as tough as hell and good pieces. As a result, they're common as hell too. And of course, due to the popularity of the real thing, there are even more 'homages' and proper fakes around too. So there's nothing 'exclusive' or 'individual' about a sports Rolex, unless you're a Vintage fan and collect idiotically priced double-red SDs etc. wink

If money is irrelevant, then get a Rolex sports as a daily hack (or better, a Tudor… but that's a class thing really and down to how much you value branding on your daily wear) and something with a *special* movement as your 'big money' watch.

If I wasn't an idiot with too many watches, I'd probably have a Rolex SD 16600 as my daily (or a Tudor Heritage Chrono, probably a better daily wear watch with the chrono complication as well as the date), and then all the rest of the money would be invested (hah!) in some beautiful complication from JLC. But I'm not sensible and I'd like a Richard Mille… and my collection HAS to have something from Breguet because of the man himself, and then a titanium watch would be nice, etc. etc. and I've got no self-control.

Seriously though - diamond encrusted Rolex? That's not a watch. It's jewellery, pure and simple. If you want jewellery, then go for it. I have no bad attitude to those who are honest about what they actually want. But if you're after a Rolex because you want a robust, high quality watch, then their steel 'sports' watches (the 'tool' watches) are what you need, Tudor make them too (same company underneath) - then the *real* precious stuff can be saved for special days / evenings.

To be honest, i am totally open to ideas, i did fancy a Breitling. I have a budget of 2k but could stretch to 3, this is going to be a watch which i will probably keep for some time if not forever so want something a little special. Feel free to post any watches currently for sale.

Thanks smile
