Apple's recent faux pas has lead me to question are we too reliant on technology? With millions being invested to defend ourselves against 'cyber wars' is it as much of a weakness as it is a strength? Anyone any thoughts, I'm still to make up my mind? Or has anyone suffered a disastrous technology FAIL?

Apologies if this seems it is in the wrong forum but I feel this is more appropriate to the masses rather than the select few that browse the technology forum and will probably defend it to the bitter end!

I think he's refering to the alarm failing the other day,

Technology isn't just defined as computers, phones etc the wheel is technology (be it an old technology) based on that no we arn't reliant as without wheels i can use my legs tongue out

I wasn't sure what he was talking about, could have been the non-existant iPhone signal issue, the dodgy screens on iMacs, the MacBook Air screen corruption issues, the iPad shutting down in sunlight issue, the cracking iPhone screens....

Sorry I thought it was obvious because it's received so much news coverage recently but I meant the alarm thing that made everyone late for work.

I think people are getting too accustomed to it in their cars.

do you mean those auto wipers, lights, gearboxes, traction control, reversing sensor, digital reversing view etc. in modern cars?

It's all about how you use it. You could argue that people are now better educated because they can find any information they need on the Internet. You could also say that's a negative because nobody has to go and read a book these days.

When you can buy a car that can parallel park for you, you know something, somewhere is wrong.

It's not a new thing, though. People are always late on the days the clock changes. It's just for a slightly different reason this year. smile

Ah right, after reading that I realised it was inferring that you knew that.

In many walks of life we are too dependant.

I'll stick to my car with no abs, no traction control, and manual 5 speed gearbox.

If I could I would be on carbs!

In saying that I love my TV and movies but I don't rely on those!

Does anyone like any of these car 'do-it-for-you' gadgets? Or has anyone had them go wrong?

My new car is packed full of all sorts of gubbins.

But far from getting in the way I have found it rather helpful much to my surprise and lets put that in context of mind numbing commute rather than pressing on.

The adaptive cruise is simply fantastic - I set the distance I want to keep from cars, set the speed and the car does the rest without my constantly having to adjust my speed. The system stops intefering when it should and it doesnt get in the way.

Long term we will see on reliability I guess.

However if it was my weekend car then it would be a no nonsense bare minimum technology approach I would take (I just cant justify two cars).

Auto wipers on my Range Rover are one of the best fripperies it has. Obviously they're good for wiping drizzle and rain off the screen when necessary, but when I'm splooshing through puddles they'll start their wipe action before the muddy water has even finished splashing onto the screen.

  • your auto wipers on your car may be rubbish.

If you want a car to drive itself, stop itself, park itself, keep distances regulated for you then get the sodding train as you are too stupid to be behind the wheel
