Still thinking about one of these, peeps say go for the turbo? Will one with 50 - 70000 miles up be a good bet if its got FFSH and obviously I keep it serviced correctly or have they a habit of going pop?

Pwig works at a fiat/alfa dealership, I think he said the cambelt was upwards of 2k to do! Engine out job I think.

Yeah, Pwig recently started a topic about his job ordering services (can't be bothered to find it!) and he said one of the delights was telling Fiat Coupe owners the cost of their 72K service:

Pwig: The cost will be £1300.
Owner: GASSSSSSSSPPPP! I knew it was gonna be expensive but I didn't think it'd be THAT much!

Enjoy !

There are quite a few specialist who can do the cambelt for about £600 now and no longer need to drop the engine. However if you can get one thats been done all the better.

Another dirt cheap rocketship to consider is the Nissan 200SX, rwd plus lsd = big smile (or holey hedge).

I ran one for 18 months. Servicing needn't be overly expensive.

There are two choices for the 70k:

Go to the barely trained halfwits at your local Fiat/Alfa dealer (yes, I do have an axe to grind ) and pay £2k. Go to any one of a dozen specialists and pay £650. Not a difficult decision

Prices from Perfect Service, fairly typical:

12/12 24/24 36/36 48/48 60/60 72/72 84/84 96/96 108/108
Coupe 2.0 20v £73.19 £176.70 £91.70 £179.78 £73.19 £513.93 £73.19 £179.78 £91.70
Coupe 2.0 20v Turbo £73.19 £176.70 £91.70 £179.78 £73.19 £637.31 £73.19 £179.78 £91.70

had one for 3 years 100k miles and loved it, cried when it went ....
that said, I wasn't paying for everything, so the bill for £2,700 ( yes you read that right ) for the cambelt ( oh, and clutch, flywheel ( cracked ) cam variator etc. ) wasn't too much of a shock
I'd suggest a specialist for the cambelt change, keep it full of oil, then put Optimax in the top and push the accelerator through the bottom
and if you have brake probs ... Pagid disks/EBC redstuff pads and Castrol DOT5 fluid work a treat

If I had £7-8k to spend on a car for me, I'd have another by teatime
