Right quick question.

I'm looking at joining a gym after recently giving up an active job for a more sedentery affair so am looking to join a gym. Is it worth waiting until January as they seem to have big ad campaigns for the New Years Resolution crowd, do they normally have discounts then or am I as well joining now?

Given the current climate it's always worth going into a chain gym and trying to work out a deal that suits you. Failing that, look for an independent gym that has what you want, you might be surprised at the cheapness of them.

There's always deals on offer.....I love the ones where they waive the joining fee. I don't think any of them have ever charged a joining fee, yet they think they are doing you a favour!

Yeah, its a fee that they can remove easily to make you feel you are getting a better deal. Cheap tactic but works on most!

Also look round the web there are a lot of things you can do at home with quite basic equipment.
google
body weight culture
ross training
crossfit

once a chain gets you it can be a bugger to get out of ther contract, make sure you read all the small print first...

if you do join one be consistent and don't expect miracles over night.

good luck btw

They're less likely to run discounts in January as that's their busiest sign up period. Join towards the end of the month when they have targets to hit.

Anyone who pays a joining fee for a gym is a mug.

Personally I'd join now. They tend to be less flexible in January when they are flooded with new members all full of the best of intentions and very little motivation queueing to hand their bank details over at full price.

DownUnder.

Just curious as I've only ever joined two gyms, why is paying a joining fee bad?

Also I'd agree now is the best time. The new year is always flooded with the 3 week crew and is a pain when they become overloaded.

Because 99.9% of the time they should give you it free, as you will be paying them monthly anyway.
Its like Sky installation fee, NOBODY should pay it but because some people dont say 'why do i have to pay that given im paying you x amount a month?' they get away with still pretending to need that payment.
Same goes for mobile contracts, at the moment joining/activation fees are waived but they can easily be charged (or be marketed as being charged for then waived if questioned).

Oh ok thanks buddy. I have spent the majority of my adult life training in military establishments so I wasn't aware of those unspoken rules!

Cheers!

I have joined a 'community' gym and they only waived the joining fee and I was reffered by a friend. They are not the same as commercial gyms in their offers but overall the pricing is a bit better.

I visited a couple of gyms and if you bargain really hard and say you are going to other gyms you will get offers.

I did not want to sign up to a yearly contract. I went into LA Fitness who apparently only do yearly memberships, but they offered me a deal for 9 months with a reduced rates, apparently it was a staff offer and staff could give them to their friends/family but they were just using them to sign up customers. it probably was a sales technique, although it has to be said, he was not THAT desperate to sign me up.

gym "membership consultants" appear to be a bit like double glazing salesmen. Called into local Fitness First on Sunday and enquired about membership.

Price started at something like £40/month with joining fee, gradually came down and down. They were still £13/month more expensive than a new gym (Pure Gym anyone) opening next week nearby.

My missus pays £19/month for fitness first but they wouldn't believe me!

Awesome. Just joined my local one that just opened.
£15.99 a month I don't think you can go wrong.

Lack of Olympic bench, but they have a smith machine. Their site even has usage limits that says when the best time to go is.

It's open 24 hours and it seems that there's roughly 0 people there at 2am. Lol.
10pm is probably when I'll go.

There's no staff after 10pm though and I think they have limited staff all day. You log in with a pin number and go through a turnstile. Suits me absolutely fine.

Added advantage of being able to track when and for how long you went to the gym. All available online.

I just know a nerd is behind this company.

Thought I would bump this as I visited PureGym today on a day membership.

My thoughts

The good:

£17 a month is a bargain.

24/7 Opening is good.

PIN useage is better than a members card (as long as you remember the number!)

Website is good for information and data.

There are a LOT of machines. Expecially basic benches for doing free weights. There were at least 5 in this gym compared to 2 in most other gyms I have been to.

Equipment is all new at the moment and there is a huge variety of machines and other bits and bobs.

The bad:

Its bound to be jamp acked big time when its busy. I went at 9pm and it was fairly busy but not too busy.

The crowd is a bit young - but not really a major issue TBH.

==========

Overall its pretty good. For £17 is a bargain. As long as its not too busy then I will prob join up.
