I've just sold my previous car - an E46 M3 SMG - and am now looking to buy an early facelifted 996 C2 either privately or from a non-OPC dealer. Have got a few to check out but have a few questions.

1. Is it possible to tell from the vehicle number whether it is a UK supplied car or a RHD to UK spec? I'm told the cars I'm looknig at are UK but would like to verify for myself.

2. Can someone confirm the service inetrval for these cars. From the Porsche website it looked like it was 12k miles or every 2 years.

2. I was originally going for a manual, but there seems to be a better choice of tiptronic models for sale. Any opinions on the tip over the manual. I had no problems with the SMG on my M3.

3. Any must-have options that I should be looking for. I'm looking to spend spend about £45K so won't get a super high spec for that and about 15-25K miles.

4. Would a 2.5 year old car with about 25k on be frowned upon as high mileage from a resale perspective. I'll only be doing about 6k miles a year myself.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers, James.

PS Tip' v Manual, the debate will go on and on.

If you are buying your 911 for regular daily transport ( city or motorway ) the tip' is hard to beat IMHO. You can always slp it into manual mode for a bit more fun.

Hi james,

Just bought one of the early 996's from an independent. As my first Porker i was determined to go for a manual (tiptronic is for girls etc). having spent a large proportion of my bank hols in traffic jams i can confirm it is a minor pain in the a**e in traffic. If you live in the countryside and only drive for fun or do trackdays then get a manual. I've never driven a tiptronic but everyone i know who has swears by them. I only drive my car for fun and love the manual, the gearbox isn't great on the early cars but i hear its a lot better on the post 2001 models you'll be likely to buy.

Good luck whatever you buy mate, i guarantee you will love it tipt or manual. I enjoy it the more i drive it and it beats the hell out of the clio that was my previous set of wheels! (and my yamaha R1 bike!)

I had the same choice when I got my 996 and went for a manual (coming from a fully auto clk). My advice would be try both and make up your own mind, although if your coming from an SMG box you will probably end up going for tiptronic. I just feel you can't have quite the same level of fun in a tip. Each to their own though...

Cheers

Jon
