The ill-prepared

It's the only reason I can think why so many people are riding around various parts of Londonium with either no lights or just a front light (???) and wearing dark clothing.

When they wake up in Hospital, I'm sure they'll wonder why. A young lady I asked yesterday just looked at me blankly. But then clearly her iPod was making my comments difficult to hear.

I was amazed a cyclist i "met" on the road last week didn't get knowcked over. It was chucking it down, near dark. With the amount of rain / spray, it was actually dangerous to just have side lights on, normal headlights were a must.

Then, here comes some cyclist numpty in dark clthes, no lights, weaving in and out of traffic around the trafford park area - which is full of heavy goods bits chucking up all sorts of spray. I passed him, so was watching the left mirror like a hawk when attempting to turn left, but the car behind me didn't, and nearly flattened him. From the hand waving, I think he saw the entire fault as the car driver, not his lack of light / visibility...

I wonder if the clock-change has caught a few people out. Chap cycled past the T-junction at the bottom of my road the other night. He had a helmet on, fair enough, which sort of indicates he's not a casual user, but he was in grey "workman" clothing and his bike was also a dark colour. I can't say I didn't see him, despite the dark, because I make an effort to "see" cyclists, but he hadn't any lights or his-viz clothing/reflectors on him.

2.30 this morning driving home from work, I was seriously shocked by the number of cyclists in Oxford with no lights, must have counted at least a dozen, one guy must have been late teens on a beat up BMX wearing dark clothing hopping on and off the pavement into and across the road, totally oblivious of cars, taxis, buses and pedestrians. I did wonder if he had just done something he shouldn't have and was 'escaping'
