Almost sorry to post up such a mundane question, but I have a dial type pressure monitor that hits 50psi, and I need to go to at least 55 from time to time.

One monitor that would do me for my Elise, Land Rover and (eh-hem) Caravan (55psi) would be great.

Quite like the simplicity of a digital, but will it be as accurate as an analogue please?

In short, consistent accuracy and a fairly wide range of reading will be great.

Your recommendations would be most welcome....no pressure (see what I did there with the pressure reference?)

On the whole the cheap digital ones are infinitely more repeatable than an analogue one. The absolute values aren't always right but if you can work with the values given, you will always get the same results. The pressure transudcers inside these things are very accurate. It's just that they probably never got calibrated.

Thanks Mars. So digital over analogue each time? If I start to (already am) obsess over accuracy....what then?

Don't obsess

You have already said that consistency is most important

And don't expect the ordinary gauges to be much more "honest" than a digital, I'd expect their accuracy to be near enough fairy tales too

The "best" way of doing it is to (slowly) drive to a couple of tyre places, measure up the pressures and cross check with theirs then check again with your own at home

Soon get a generally acceptable figure to allow for when using the digital

Honestly, I doubt if there is much credence to be given in the garage's forecourt calibration either

Slightly contradicting what I said previously, I've got 4 tyre gauges, all different brands, and they all offer measurements within 2psi of each other. This sort of indicates that some calibration was done post production. In fact, 3 are dead-on. A 4th indicates a higher reading than the others.

It's just that, when you buy an instrument, you either buy it with a calibration certificate or you take your chances. I considered buying a torque wrench with a calibration certificate but in the end I just went for one of those bendy ones with a gauge on it, rather than a clicky one. I could at least measure it's accuracy with weights (if I could be arsed).

Likewise, I haven't really been bothered enough to buy tyre gauges with calibration certificates and yet here I am with enough evidence that I can trust any of them to give me repeatable and, probably, absolutely accurate readings.

I've got the Race-X one too - I really like it.
