Sounds more like its a genuine car where the numberplates have been nicked for a ringer rather than the car being a stolen one, will cross post onto BabyBMW though anyway

Why would they do it by stealing the plates? then its obvious to the owner (and then the police when they report it) whats going on and its not like its hard to get plates made up without the V5 etc. Unless its for a bank job that day or something scratchchin

Numberplates seem to get nicked quite often to be bolted on to clone cars, easier and cheaper than getting false ones made up I guess. Basically if you steal (or even own) car A, steal plates off a similar car B, then drive around in car A with car B's plates on it not caring about speed cameras etc, and because car B hasnt been stolen its unlikely to be flagged up on ANPR systems in Police cars etc. Id imagine it's especially prevalent around London with cars going in and out of the Congestion zone.

i'm in surbiton will have to take a look at this.

used to see cars dumped with plates removed when they were scrap (when scrap cars had no value) but rare to see a new car with no plates.
