I work in hospitality and have for quiet a number of years. My cv is full of career progression and awards and recognition for a job well done. I’m currently working at a 4 black star hotel but have been offered a job at a four red star hotel.

So this is my question.

The job I have been offered is closer to my gf. I currently live an hour’s drive. So if I take the job I can now move in with her which is what both of us want. It pays more money than my current job. (about £1500 more), the hours will be less (I’m doing about 60 now and it will go down to 45). This all sounds great i know, but it’s a drop in position. Rather than being an assistant manager im possibly going to become a head waiter.

So my cv will say assistant manager to head waiter. Yes it’s a better style property but it’s a lesser position in a better property.

I really don’t know what to do. Do I take the job but keep looking for something better or do I stay working for a hotel that treats me like dirt, pays me crap for the amount of hours i do.

This is quite telling. I think you are putting in way too much thought on how good you look on paper rather than what you actually want. Chances are you can advance at the new hotel anyway eventually.

I say go for it. It's more money, less hours and closer to your mrs. That is ultimately what people go to work for, not too have a good looking CV that is only seen when applying for jobs.

Our resource manager came round last week asking if everything was ok etc etc.

We got talking about job progression and I told him honestly that I wanted the most amount of money for the least amount of responsbility and hours. Not interested in fancy job titles, having a blackberry glued to my ear 24/7. Just hope he can sort out a 70 tea lady job for me now.

You could always take the job and ask them to give you a fancy title too.

You are obviously thinking about jobs in the future and them seeing a drop in position..

I think relocation is a good enough reason and maybe you could say you wanted a new challenge as you had "topped out" at the Assistant Manager job ?

From what you've written here I'd go for it.

So they ask why you went from Assistant Manager to Head Waiter and you tell them - better company, better money and better location. Easy.

The right choice!

Would you rather be FD or MD of a two bob little company or a nondescript director (or even below that) of a multinational? I know which I'd rather be.
