Gearbox oil level

Hi All.

Checking fluid levels and need to check level in my G50 box.

Do we still open level plug on the side and top up to that level even though the box is inverted?

Only way I know of is to drain it and put 3.5L back in. I did this at the start of the year just to be sure!

What if you are running an oil cooler , surely all the extra piping and radiator would need at least an extra 1lt.........????????

There has got to be a better way than draining and refilling. As said, what about oil coolers etc.

Is there no way a dip stick could be fitted or could the level be "dipped" from the fill hole when filling before re-fitting the plug?

I do the same: fill it up with oil as specified by the supplier and then an extra 1/2 qt and the transaxle will exhaust what ever it doesn't need into the the catch tank.

Talk with your supplier if you have any attached cooler/pump.

You find the amount needed by filling the piping and cooler prior to the install. Add this amount to what is required by the box and all is well.

What damage can be caused from over filling , or as said will it just push out what it does'nt need through the breather.......???????

Reason I'm asking, is my G96/88 box took six quarts. ( 6 x 0.95 lt )

Overfilling has been known to blow the oil seals on the box

Also will cause the box to run too hot as the components are bathing in the oil rather than splashing and aerating to cool.
