Was having a chat with a colleague the other day and he was saying that his Porsche 928 S4 was, at one stage, the fastest normally aspirated production cars on the market, it wasn't but...what is it at the moment?

I'm guessing people will want to know what you mean by fastest. Top speed? Then probably the F1?

Fastest? Overall or to 60mph?
Production? Is that built with the intention of being road legal or mass produced? If mass produced, what constitutes mass produced? TVR Cerbera mass produced or BMW M3 mass produced?

Means "at the moment, to date" or "at the moment, in current production".

At 240.1mph, then the F1 in the former case, but no idea what NA car built today is the "fastest". Murcielago LP640 (now that Pagani Zondas have ceased production)? 599GTO?

The Ferrari 599 GTO tops out at 208. Yes there are faster one offs but many are not N/A nor produced except in small numbers.

Lambo M'Lago LP something does over 210 mph but don't know if it is still in production, nor if it actually goes that fast!!

'Fastest' engine? You mean the engine that revs the highest?

Not necessarily the "fastest" engine, measuring piston speed in m/sec. A slightly lower-revving engine with a longer stroke might exceed the piston speed of a higher revving, shorter stroked one.

The record that the OP's friend I assume is refering to was after a salt flats run in 1986, youtube have it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsxQZ_H96aY
I'm not sure who the record was recognised by, and I'm more than happy to acknowledge that it could just be that Porsche were the only ones who bothered to do this, possibly as a marketing gimmick, however, as an S4 owner this is one of the auto trivia items that I'll happily trot out in the pub in the drunken one-upmanship that occurs, along with it being the only sports car to win European car of the year (the 928 not the S4), and for having the biggest garage bills, (this is from personal experience and from not knowing any Ferrari or Maserati owners). I still love my fat-arsed mistress though.smile
