Exhaust noise question

Does the size of the downpipe determine how loud an exhaust is or the size of the tailpipe? (Obviously leaving out engine sizes for the time being!)

Strangely, the muffler plays a very significant role. Or even the silencer if you prefer.

Both have an effect, as does the presence or absence of cats.

the number of cylinders also, the alfas v6 in mine plays an enormous part...
