Okay so I drive an MR2 roadster, it has 230bhp though thanks to this funny snall like looking thing bolted to the exhaust.

I was off to buy fireworks the other night but since my brother in law was ill I got the job of taking my sister instead. It was dark and she won't drive at night, it scares her. She also can't see properly at night so not such a good idea.

So anyway she gets in and tells me not to drive fast, that's before I even pull away. So I take it easy, we get onto the main road and by the time I'm up to 25mph she's freaking out telling me to slow down, recons I'm doing 40 or the like. So I drive at 20mph, then comes a bend. I don't bother to slow down much as the MR2 likes bends. Bad idea, looses it again. Anyway in the end I had to drive back home and drive her in my better halves Nissan Qashqai. Drove that faster (we actually hit 40mph!) not a peep out of her!

For my troubles she told the rest of my family I drive like an idiot, was throwing her all over the place ya de da...

I mean I know MR2s are noisy, rattly and no where near as comfy as your average Qashqai but what gives???

Well played! If she's that rediculous / scared after a drive, you'll never have to give her a lift again. Next time she askes, direct her to 'taxis' in the yellow pages. Sorted.

So you know you have to take a nervy person for a ride in your car - check.
You know she probably associates speed with sportcars - check.
'She' has sight issues and cannot see well at night - check.
Therefore she is not confident driving at night and it would follow that she doesn't like being driven at night...
You drive at a speed which you are comfortable at - check.
You drive round corners which you know are within the capablities of your sports car - check.

Why did you not take the other car in the first place if you knew it was likely she would be nervous in a sportscar? She already mentioned as yoou set off that she was uncomfortable about going fast, so why antagonise her?

Are we leaning yet?

Youre a nicer person than me, id have been testing the cars capabilities to see if I could make her pass out from fear, then enjoy the quiet journey.

Or, just not bother, I cant stand idiots who think more then 37mph = death

I get a similar thing,For years, whenever I give my mum a lift she always says I drive too fast in my fiesta. despite sticking to speed limits. Though she doesn't say the same about my dad when he's doing 10-15mph over the speed limit wherever he goes in his auto E-class. oh well

Surely it's all down to feel and perception of the car.

I.e. small car with very little sound dampening = noise and a feeling of speed; versus a larger, perhaps more modern car, with lots of sound dampening = a feeling of detachment from the drive.

When I was a stoodent, I had a K10 micra. It'd feel like I was pushing warp 5 doing 40-50 around country lanes. Years later, when I had a Merc E class as a company car, I could sit at over a ton on the motorway* and it would feel like I was bimbling around at 50 MPH.

  • of course, not in the UK, officer.

If you sit low in a car, it feels faster.

You sit very low in a MR2, so could this explain it?

This is true, but I do wonder how the OP was driving?

Whenever people comment on me driving too quickly I drive much quicker for a short stint to prove how slowly o was driving, then resume normal speeds.

You can adjust your driving style to accommodate the sensitivities of passengers (and it sounds like the OP did), but some cars will just "feel" fast to a nervous Miss Daisy sitting next to you. I gave my boy racer mate (Mk4 Golf GTi Turbo) a lift home a while ago and got shouted at for "going round the corners too fast". I wasn't, I was just going round corners.

In retrospect, you should have taken the Cashcow in the first place.

my god i can relate to this...

mother (who does not have a license) always tells me off for "going too fast" when dropping a cog to engine brake down a 1:4 gradient... letting it roll upto 45 in a 30 down the hill is not too fast if im in 3rd or 4th but 30 in 2nd is too fast...

too noisy does not equal too fast... again to prove the point... picked her up from Bluewater a few weeks ago in my sisters car and while overtaking at 0.8 Leptons i got told off for going "too fast"... in my S60T5, have been going significantly faster before; but due to the lack of noise it is never too fast somehow...

I get the same in the Mini, whatever I'm doing.

...Although roundabouts are particularly good fun.

y car's speedo reads in Ks.

My Wife shat herself when she saw we were doing about 115!!

It's only 70 FFS!

FWIW, she's quite comfortable with me driving her car at the same speed, but my car's a 300ZX so kind'a gives the perception that you're maybe going faster than you are.

Meh!
