Its starting to get cold in the house so I'm looking into getting a multifuel stove for the lounge. I have 2 living rooms that both have open fireplaces to a central chimney - they haven't been used for years and are not currently working having been sealed up by the previous owner. Is it possible to connect 2 stoves to the same chimney flue pipe? The stove in the main lounge would be used regularly and the one in the second room only occasionally.

Also, does this type of thing have to be fitted by a specialist or would a general oil central heating technician be up to the job?

Two into one is a no-no.

Unless you mean that there are two flues in the single chimney stack?

If the chimney is sound you may not need liners. The flue for tue stoves can go through the register plate and stop. i may well be wrong give a local stove shop a call they are usually very helpful.
