I'd quite like to have a go at doing some carpentry (making cabinets, shelving, coving etc) and wondered if anyone could recommend a book? I've had a look on line but there are so many and its hard to tell which are good.

Years ago my father had "The Charles Hayward Book of Carpentry" which not only kept me fascinated but got me through my O level. It's old but everything in it is usable & classic.

Edited to say it is ISBN 0713514221 & called "The Complete Book of Woodwork" One on abebooks for 0.63p + P & P.
