bertone freeclimber 1.6 petrol. bmw engine. problems with starting. sometimes takes a bit on the key for it to start then it will cut immediately, then it takes a few go's before it fires and the revs come up and it settles down. other times it will start perfectly. no pattern to it. any ideas anyone

Sometimes you may need to "pre-ignite" the fuel on these engines. This is most easily achieved by stuffing a petrol soaked rag in the filler cap and lighting it.
Once the fuel inside the tank is burning well, jump in and start cranking the engine - I guarantee you will never have problems starting this engine ever again.

Well I learn something new every day:

Sounds an interesting car - but in 6 cylinder form though...

Looking at this again, it could be a number of things -

You need to ascertain whether the cutting out is due to spark or fuel.

It could be the fuel pump relay (has it been getting worse and cutting out in a shorter period of time?)

The ECU will identify if there is no spark and cut the fuel supply so without the proper diagnostic kit you might have some trouble identifying this.

Would be worthwhile checking the ECU plugs / connections as they may be corroded - could cause an issue. Also, check that the ECU isn't sitting in water - I know on the E36 the drainage tube can get blocked leaving a damp ECU.

One last thing that might help - is there a pattern with the electrics you have on, e.g. headlights or radio? Might be an alterator / battery issue, but seems unlikely if you haven't spotted it.

Best bet (for me) would be to get it diagnosed.
