I think they are some kind of sandstone but could be wrong.

Hurrah, how do I get my winnings?!

I think te geological progression (ie as you apply time and pressure) is - sand > sandstone > limestone > travertine > marble.


ETA No that's not right, marble is made from chalk. I give up!
