A couple of weeks ago the tumble broke. I opened it up and the belt had gone, replaced it with a new one and we were back up and running. Yesterday though it's broken again. You apply power, the drum starts to rotate and then it pops the trip.

What I assume is happening is that it's trying to draw too much current because the motor is working too hard. The drum turns freely but I've not opened it up again to double check any other issues.

Any ideas, or is it a dead tumble and I need a new one or a pro to fix it (and if it's more than about £50 I might as well get a new one.

Does the motor turn freely? Are the motor brushes ok? When you say it pops, do you mean a trip or the belt?

Sorry, you did say it popped the trip! Is it one of the thermal trips on the unit or the mains trip?

Mains trip.

Both the motor and the drum seem to be running free and it pops 'unloaded'

Does it trip with the belt off ie no load at all on the motor? Does it trip as you turn it on, as the motor starts, after a while?

The drum starts to turn then it trips.

I've not tried it yet without the belt on the drum, need to dismantle it again.

Could be as suggested, brushes on the motor, also the motor may have a capacitor which has packed up.

Mine did the same last year after changing the belt
Found the problem ,I'd put the wrong length screw in the rear cover and had pierced the wiring loom which caused the tripping rolleyes
