I have (early version) Nitrons on my 500, and have noticed a lot of noise on the road. The car is laid up at the moment (too much working away) but I was doing some work in the car (dash replacement) and noticed a loud knock as I got in and out. Investigating further its the driver side rear; I can literally push the rear quarter with one finger and there is a loud knock which can be felt through the bodywork. Its obviously play in the suspension somewhere.
Anyone else with Nitrons have this sort of noise?

the early NTX version suffered from this .. it's most likely teh valving knocking as it opens and isn't being cushioned .. if it knocks just as you push on the car chances are that's what it is.
good news is it doesn't actually affect the working of the damper, in fact it tells you the valving is indeed opening properly just not cushioned at the limit of it's travel.
bad news is the NTX can no longer be rebuilt, there are no parts available for it anymore ..

I hadn't noticed any adverse effects on the road; I can live with the knock as long as its nothing serious.
Not so good news that the NTX can't be rebuilt any more - one of the reasons for laying out a grand for shocks was the "rebuildability" aspect. I've barely put 400 miles on the car since they were fitted! They are not even dusty yet! I was kind of hoping for slightly longer life than that.
Nitron are of course taking the NTX in generous part exchange for the new shocks, aren't they?

How do you know what type of dampers you've got?
I get a 'clonk' occasionally when cornering (even gently), reversing up my drive, over bumps - in fact at almost any time. It sometimes seems to come from the front n/s, then sometimes from the rear n/s. Penninsula had it in last year and replaced all bushes but it still happens...but only after anout ten miles of driving.

joospeed - its worse than that! I was probably one of the first in the country with any Nitrons at all. I bought them from Peninsula in March 2001. The car was in the garage all that year, never saw the light of day (full chassis rubdown, acid etch, POR15 and Waxoyl underseal treatment). They were finally fitted by Peninsula in Sep 2002, when they also fitted a Speed 12 headlamp conversion. Mileage at that time was 24,004.
I've been working away pretty solid since Nov 2002 and haven't used the Tiv very much at all, hence it now has just over 24,400 miles on. I suspect having a son since Oct 2000 may have affected the amount of use the car gets as well!

I do actually feel pretty bad, theres's a damn good car going to waste. I actually did over 18k in my first 12 months, then got a second car because the servicing costs were killing me. The car will be 8 years old in 5 days; in the last seven of those years I have racked up a staggering 6,400 miles, or possibly 1,000 more allowing for the couple of times the odometer has stuck. Pitiful waste.
Its been SORN for the last 9 months now. I'm just getting it ready for the summer, but its going to need a service again (despite almost total lack of use). The cost per mile must be staggering.
