306 Dturbo - Project bangernomics!

I was in need of a cheap second car, general consensus was a Peugeot diesel would be cheapest to run. Didn't fancy the 106 (too small) so looked at the 306. Always wanted a Dturbo - no, I don't know why either! Picked this up at the weekend.
It is the 1.9 Dturbo. Sounds like a Transit and can be heard two streets away but seems to go well enough (above 2500rpm) and on track for about 500 miles to a tank so far.
Gave it a once over at the weekend and found the following issues to be resolved:

- No reversing lights (bulb or reversing switch failure) Cost to fix £5-10.
- Crack in windscreen. Cost to fix £50 (insurance) to £125 (not through insurance).
- No air blowing from interior fan, although fan works. Probably a disconnected pipe.
- Sounds like it runs on 3 cylinders at startup for 2-3 seconds before settling to idle properly. Possible glow plug or injector issue - not a big deal but something to look at one day.
- Intermittent rev counter, works most of the time but then shrugs in a Gallic fashion and gives up. Doesn't bother me!
It's a fairly high miler, 152k, but is in excellent condition - the interior is like new! It came with 6 months tax and 12 months MOT which was important to me. My favourite Peugeot colour, too.
I found most Dturbos under £650 not worth looking at - complete dogs by and large. Between that and £1k gets you either a lower mileage car with little MOT/tax or a higher mileage example with lots of MOT/tax. I chose the latter, backed up with a recent cambelt change and quite a bit of history. I'm not scared of high mileage cars. At 15 years old it's only 10k/year.
If your budget extends significantly over £1k then the newer HDi models might be worth a gander, they are meant to be quite a bit more fuel efficient too - bonus.
Insurance is dirt cheap, I paid £360 with no NCB (used on the Mazda) and with my girlfriend as an additional driver with a provisional licence!

It isn't too bad, a bit front heavy as you'd expect with a boat anchor under the bonnet! I haven't really had the chance to wring its neck yet as the weather has been so poor. I also need to put a set of decent tyres on it first as the fronts are close to the wear indicators and the rears not too far off. Might stick some all-season tyres on there to cope with the snow.
I loved mine, but keep on top of the coolant situation - frequent replacement keeps the system in tip top order and helps prevent HG failure, something these cars are a bit prone to.
I was extremely happy with the handling of mine, put a XSi rear bean on which made it very oversteery!!!

We have just sold my wife's X plate 306 HDi and it was a superb motor. We owned it for 5 years and it averaged between 55-65mpg depending on the sort of journeys we were doing. I did hear the Dturbo and HDi engines are very under stressed so with a little looking after you should see a fair bit of life in that car.
