Probably a repost, but this is going around my colleagues like wildfire and is really addictive.

How many can you name?

It seems to be by American standards. I got 118 the first time out and quite worryingly after getting a class of Korean students to do it, they got 100!

I got to 97 before the brain stopped. I was particularly poor with Africa, South America and the Far East. I forgot Belgium too, but I think I can be forgiven for that.

I got over 100, but I'm sure their spellings for some were a bit off.

It depends by how you define "country". I go on what countries are recognised by the United Nations. England therefore does not exist as a fully fledged legitimate country as it is not entitled to its own seat at the United Nations.
At international level, the only country that counts is the United Kingdom.

Also, United Kingdom would cover all the islands too... I would guess

UK is a political union, comprising a couple of countries, a province, a principality, and some islands.

The United Nations recognise the political union, or the "state" if you will.

The country of my birth is England, not UK.

Of course, try being that pedantic when you try and enter the US on the visa waiver programme rofl

I wasn't denying that England wasn't a "country" -- but ir definitely isn't a recognised Nation Sate. As I said, it all depends on what you are including in your list. Most lists of the world's "nations" woukld not include England (or Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales) as independent countries - despite what the natives would like.
