OPTIMAL Tire Size and Offset for 'Chipped' S4

When I get my S4 I'll be adding 18 inch rims all around -- for appearance, yes -- but I want to avoid trying to shove the biggest tires and widest wheels can I can fit inside the wells.

What is the OPTIMAL tire set up for a chipped S4? I was thinking 225/35 F and 285/35 R on 18x8 and 18x9.5s respectively. But is this necessary? Will tires that wide just slow me down?

Also, what is the highest offset I can run with 285s on 18x9.5s? I notice a lot Esprits (pre fender extensions) with aftermarket rims running offsets that, to me, look way to low. I do not want my tires sticking out past my fenders any more than is required!

I don't know that anyone can tell you what OPTIMAL tire size would be since that is so subjective. I'm sure Lotus would tell you that optimal is the stock recommended sizes, rolling diameter and offset.

Go to the EFF and read up on the various tire sizes fitted to the UK and Federal models and start from there.

I'm currently running V8 size wheels and tires on my S4s and am very happy with them. The car is still extremely quick. Is it slower than with the smaller stock sizes, sure it is but not that you could tell without a stopwatch.

The biggest concern would be not to upset the balance and handling of the car. In which case you want to stay as close to the recommended diameters and offsets and ride height.

I'm running 255 rear and 225 fronts, I feel they are well balanced on the car. They don't stick out, offer god traction, and look to be sized "right". I definitely like them better than the 245 rears, that is for sure. Fills up the well better.
