I have been considering starting up something like this on the side, just looking for opinions or advice from anyone who does this or something similar.

I understand the Alientech Kess system is good, deals like this look appealing:

No doubt there are further costs when you look into it further to get you up and running.

I think if you focus your marketing on the fuel savings you could do well. Fuel is only going up and up and the more it does the more a remap makes sense. More power is a bonus.

speak to Ben at www.sharkperformance.co.uk , he has just done his first year, and is now setting agents up. He will also tell you which kit works and what doesn't.

That industry is awash with Chancers so unless you really know what you're doing, are happy to compete with people offering "tuning services" with a lap top (instead of the equipment you really need), can afford to damage the odd ECU now and then etc, then I'd personally give it the barge pole.

Good luck smile

Unless you have access to a dyno then its all just wk material.
Canned tunes for boring OEM stuff.

Snake oil for the most part. Certainly not optimal anyway.

Heres my 2ps worth.

Theres a lot of competition in the market and without haveing a reputable name for your self, you will struggle to charge decent money, as the chancers are constantly lowering their prices.

Its all about reputation and recommendations.

Also to bear in mind is that what support you have in place for the unexpected? What if you remap a car and it wont start? what will you do? Who do you have for support etc?

Are you aware of the difference between a Master tool and a slave tool? A slave tool will tie you into the supplier you bought the tool from and you will be forced to buy all your files from them, rather than being able to shop around.

Feel free to PM me if you need any further info.

Thanks

Had a look at the link you posted. It is from eliteremaps, I can personally recommend them.
I have been doing work for elite for a few years now, they know there stuff. They will also assist if you blank , brick the ecu.
When looking at the remapping biusness you will need technical assistance , the files turned round quickly and decent safe gains . The kess2 is a good tool over the years I have used a few genius . Kess1 , Cmd etc.
I find kess to have a good vehicle coverage and easy to use.
Not sure why people say tools with laptops are bad as most of the leading manufactures use there tool in conjunction with a laptop.
The gains quoted at elite are realistic and safe. You will get tuners that quote higher figures but there is more chance of component failure pushing the engine etc too hard.
For the standard everyday car it us not compulsory to set up on a rolling road as there is plenty of tolerance within the ecu to achieve nice gains without the requirement for a rolling road. High performance cars Evo, Subaru etc would benefit if they have custom turbo injectors , fmc etc
Hope this has helped you out.
I have nothing to gain by giving the above information, only from my personell experience have a given the above info.

1) don't get a slave, you'll be tied in to some chancer.
2) get every method of recovery, eprom writer, BMD etc
3) Learn about cars, you'll die if when some one asks if you have increased the advance or retarded it.

Kess is OK, but it's a tool, same as buying a set of snap on screw drivers won't make you a master technician.

Just to add to this, having looked into getting my car remapped. Customers don't know/see much difference and so will go for the cheapest one in many cases unless you are a known mapper. it is a 'race to the bottom' on prices to an extent. Bear in mind that forums can break your business in seconds with one post about a supposed map that 'blew up' an engine someone heard about once. Either do it properly or don't do at all IMO.

I'm sorry, I am a big supporter of proper remapping, live testing and mapping by people who specialise in certain models.
Rtech for example, TFSI tuning
Darkside Development, TDI tuning
Shark also do TFSI and some TDI stuff
Revo is about the only "generic" map I would suggest but then again they tend to specialise with the VAG/Ford stuff.

Every day you see on Facebook another generic remapping company pop up and I'm fed up with them. They're all awful. They all claim "Another remap done with an extra 20%bhp and torque" but not a single picture of a before and after dyno chart.

Are you a mechanic, do you know about engine problems?
Remapping can highlight otherwise hidden issues with the car.
Do you actually understand what you are doing, I'm not talking about uploading the map to the car, I'm talking about fuelling, ignition timing/advance, EGT and EMP changes from what you're doing
Can you offer before and after proven gains?

Generic flash maps are known pretty bad, especially considering the tool(s) are about £1500 and you can get a map file for EVERY CAR
How can they be any good if they have files for every car? Simply not possible.

Just purchased a classic be of Kess V2, from China. Red board which sadly make no sense to me. I’ve seen some update files and I’m not always partial to copies and ripoffs. I bought it as a tester for some old motors for fun.

Anyone used one of the latest China clones and managed updates from online sites.
