Just had a letter from my local Jaguar dealer offering a free software upgrade (and free 24-point check looking for extra work of course).

Anyone have any idea what it does and whether it makes any difference to anything? Car is 2006 'S' 2.7D.

Main bit is:

'Much like your computer at home the software on the computers in your Jaguar need to be kept up to date. These updates ensure that your Jaguar is running at its most efficient and to it maximum potential'.

And then the bit about a free 24-point check and a nice 0844 number to call.

I did wonder if it was a euphemism for 'recall'. I plan to ring them and find out exactly what upgrade they have to offer for a 2006 S-Type.

Hi,
I would suggest the first rule of computing is: If it ain't broke don't fix it. But it doesn't hurt to ask what they claim it will fix...

My thoughts as well. If the letter had given a list of models, years and exactly what upgrades they had ('v3.4' etc) then it would be more convincing.

No-one else had a letter? Perhaps it's just a local initiative.

I've understood that software updates are applied when the car goes in for service, should there be any.

Had a chat with the service dept. He checked the reg no and thought there was an update for the transmission; however he said the car had to cool down first so they'd need it for two hours. That's too long for a 'drop-in' so I left it.

Worth having done. The upgrades fall into several categories, increasing in severity; upgrade only if customer complains, upgrade next time the car is in for scheduled maintenance, contact the customer and ask them to come in for the upgrade right up to a full blown safety related "recall".

In this case it may be a "upgrade only if customer complains" type of item, that your local dealer is using to entice you in to the dealership.
