Axle specific tyres?

Directional tyres are commonplace, so why not axle specific tyres? Afterall, on a RWD car, the front tyres have a different role when compared to the front tyres on a FWD car and vice versa.

Seems like an obvious way to improve the performance/handling of a car through optimised traction at each end so why aren't they available?

They do, in a way. My car has wider tyres at the back for more grip.

Must be a good reason for it, although you do get drive and steer tyres for HGV's

Vast majority have the same tyres and size all round though. If HGV's have drive/steer tyres, seems odd that cars don't?
