I'm in the market for a new car, and have been thinking about giving an Mk1 1.6 a go. I'm just wondering, has anyone here had any luck insuring one of these under the age of 21?

Not when under 21, but I insured my Mk2.5 1.8 at 22.
It wasn't that fearsome to insure. Less than a Clio 182. smile

I had my Mk2.5 1.8 Sport when I was 20. Insurance was just under £1100 - which I thought was reasonable at the time! I'm 22 now and paying £600 for my modified mk3, and a bit less for my (also slightly modified) mk1!

Who are you insured with rfn?
I'm 23 but I don't expect mine to be anything like £600.
I've yet to find what difference 3 points will make either... frown

22 when I got my first '5...It was slightly more expensive to insure than the XJ V8 I had - Around £750.

It's still the same now though @ newly turned 24.

I'm 20 and have an '99 MK2 1.8iS.. Its insured at about £2800 a year because of a woman who rear-ended me and caused us to go 50/50 somehow.

It is quite expensive but I've only been driving 2 years and that crash was in the 10th month of my 1st NCB so didn't get that then cancelled my old policy half way through because the claim was then settled. So I should have atleast 1 year NCB but haven't frown

I currently pay just over £600 on a classic Mini with an engine swap and various modifications (declared) and I'm 19, I'm hoping my insurers will class an early 90's MX5 as a classic and give me a good deal.. I'm not feeling too hopeful after seeing the quote you're all getting.

You never know your luck.

If you have trouble insuring and definitely want an MX5 (and you do), look for one of the later - 96-98 - 1.6 UK models. Lower-powered but much cheaper to insure. And still a "proper" car thumbup

Im now 21 but first insured my 1.6 jap import when I was 20. I went through Churchill as the named driver and put my mum as an additional driver. Was about £600 (already had 3 years no claims tho). Hope this helps smile

The low power 1.6 isn't as bad as most people seem to think it is. They usually make around 100bhp on the dyno whereas the high power 1.6 often makes little more that 105bhp and often less torque. I think Mazda down-stated the performance to help with insurance.

The difference between 1.6 and 1.8 wasn't that much when I was looking (when I was 22), hence buying the 1.8. smile

I bought my UK MX5 1.8 at 20 years old and insurance was just under £600. This was on a limited mileage policy of 10000 miles but when it came to renewal I got rid of this and the insurance still dropped to £550. I had three years NCB when I bought it. Insurance was through admiral with both parents on the policy.

I also didnt find much difference between the 1.6 and 1.8, I was 22 when I first started looking. Imports are a bit more but not massively.

To be honest though, I dont think they are THAT much to insure - certainly it wont be cheap but if you compare with hot hatch type cars you could also get for your 2 grand or so, I dont think there that bad - not a typical 'boy racer' car.

And the specialist guys have been much much cheaper than mainstream insurers for me - I belive this is exaggerated by owning a modified, imported, high-ish annual mileage car though.
