Hi - currently running an E60 550i to relax and recover after 11months of unbeleivable hassle with a 6.8ltr SC Monaro. The 550's not a keeper though and I was looking at a VXR8 early next yr however the build quality of the BMW is wining me over, so is the price of some M5's!

Apart from the obvious things like fuel use, tank range, high tire wear, clutch replacements, what are the other issues with something like a 70k 2006 car in good condition...? I very much doubt I would stomach a huge BMW warrentee premium as a safe guard just in case so probably wouldnt bother and just save a little each month in case. Im quite handy with a spanner but these modern cars seem to need a modem link rather than a socket set to fix.

Stupid or realistic?

I was looking into this aswell. Ive heard figures of 20k for new gearbox being mentioned, plus they are not producing the v10 engine anymore....sounds expensive when they run out of crate engines.

From what other people are mentioning they sound far from bomb proof.

Ive never owned one so basically i have no real life idea. Just what ive read off other owners posts. They aint half tempting though!

I'd guess that there are a lot more owners who have a warranty and don't make a claim than ones that do. Typically you only ever hear of the latter.

On the other hand, is a £100 a month too much to pay for peace of mind? Difficult decision. I'd probably go for one with less than 60K on the clock so you at least have the option of taking out BMW's insured warranty at a reasonable cost.

Performance car bargain though for sure.

I'm sure they have plenty of engines at BMW and you could always get a used one.

It would have to be pretty extreme to need a new engine though! There's a bit of an aftermarket starting for these cars so engine parts should be available for repair/upgrade.

What's the BMW warranty worth though? £80 month?? I'd have it personally considering you'll be visiting 8000rpm daily (you know you will!)

There are some cracking examples available in the 25-28k bracket now, no need to get a leggy 05 plate either, it'll be a false economy later down the line...

The warranty is a no-brainer really, I've always kept my M car's in the scheme and at £63 per month its not that bad value. forgive me for being blunt, but if you can't afford to factor the warranty into the running costs then you probably won't be able to afford the running costs full stop.

A few buying tips;

1, ask yourself, can you live with 15mpg on a daily basis
2, check the due dates of all serviceable items in the idrive menu
3, check all recalls are done
4, if buying from BMW try and get idrive upgraded to latest revision
5, see point 1, again.

It wont be a daily as I will get a hack for shopping etc. 15mpg will be good coming from a 600plus hp car, trust me!

I know what your saying about the warrentee but the car wont stay stock totally so any claims will likely be rejected ie: sorry sir you have a loud exhaust which has contributed to your gearbox failure - that will be 10k of your hard earned please!, its one of the reasons Im still looking at the cheaper made VXR8 and a big block dropped in, there cheap to fix relatively speaking - ie: 2.5k for a gearbox and none of the electrical worries stopping play....

Still thinking.....

I wish I'd done all those before I bought mine, if I'd got the right one I'd still have it now, although I think point 1 is the reason I'm not looking for another...!!!

From what I have garnered from various BMW forums and from speaking to my suppling dealer, BMW are not too bothered about upgrading brakes/exhaust etc. I was told they will not warranty the parts you change, obviously, but anything else should be fine.

Roger,

Think the guys above have covered the pitfalls. There's an Interlagos blue car at the dealer below looks like it might fit the bill
