David Cameron in China: ministers refuse calls to remove poppies
Those travelling with the Prime Minister were asked if they would remove the symbols.
It is thought the request was because of the poppy’s significance to the Opium Wars.
Startled officials accompanying the Prime Minister on his two-day trade mission to China were shocked when they were asked if they would remove the emblems before Mr Cameron’s official welcome at Beijing’s Great Hall.
A host of officials and four other Cabinet ministers — George Osborne, Michael Gove, Chris Huhne and Vince Cable — all refused to remove their poppies and they took their position to watch the Prime Minister inspect Chinese troops alongside Wen Jiabao, the Chinese premier.
One member of the Downing Street party said: “The Chinese told us it would be inappropriate to wear poppies because of the Opium Wars. We informed them they meant a great deal to us and we would be wearing them all the same.”
The Anglo-Chinese wars were the culmination of trade disputes between the two nations. The first took place from 1839 to 1842 and saw the British defeat the Chinese.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the second Opium War — a joint Anglo-French military operation.
Mr Cameron will pay his respects to the war dead at a ceremony in South Korea tomorrow.

Isn't this a (very) little like the Chinese turning up to Israel wearing swastika badges?
Different symbols mean different things to different cultures. Seems a bit of an insensitive way for a guest to behave.

I wonder what Gordon would have done?
Probably exactly the same just those actions would of got him called an insensitive b
d who is an embarrassment to the UK because he is an unelected scottish one eyed idiot who only got in because those 68 scottish MPs gave labour a 71 seat majority in the houses of commons and no one in england ever voted labour and he he is a tosser and its all blairs fault anyway and so on for at least ten pages. But cameron wears a blue tie so everythings fine
Well they were damned if they did and damned if they didnt, at least they made a decision and backed it. I half suspect had it been Brown they would started out one way, U-turned at the first hint of criticism and then found themselves being smacked again from the otherside and trying to do another semi-U turn to come up with a half arsed solution that just annoyed everybody.
