Replacement for D90

Having had my Nikon D90 nicked along with my ed30 golf and a myriad of other things. since June I've been without a digital SLR and using a Canon Ixus 130, with variable effect.
I know a decent workman shouldn’t blame his tools, but the quality of picture I'm getting out of the 130 is nowhere near the quality that I was getting from my D90, besides which, I'm not and never likely to be a professional photographer, just somebody who knows that in my hands decent kit = semi decent results.
So the big question, is that I having got thoroughly fed up with my "insurance" co. I want to replace my D90 . . . . . . . what should I get, budget is in the region of £700, would like a decent enough zoom for it to cope at race meetings / Goodwood etc. and have the adjustability to let me play when I have time. . . . . I know my budget wont stretch to replacing the other lens that were stolen at the moment, but would like to keep future upgrades in mind
