Just been to Kwik Fit
Discussion
Who fixed the tracking on my car.
I asked them to check the brakes & they said the rears needed new pads and discs.
One of the rear discs has about an inch of light corrosion around the outer edge (so the pad is clearly needing replacement) The chap told me that they wouldnt change just the pads (the disc looked perfectly ok to me, ie not scored or warped) because it would be 'unsafe'. Is that right? Is it normal to change the discs because the pad isnt making full contact or is it that Kwik Fit are trying to rinse some work out of me?
Also they quoted £160 all in to replace both rear discs and pads (its a Mk 4 diesel golf) is that reasonable?

You get good and bad branches in every national chain. Of course everyone assumes the worst in that they are trying to rip off the customer for a set of discs. Has anyone considered the possibility that the discs are at or close to their minimum thickness and that they may not last for the life of the new pads?
I went to KF for an oil change. Only change the difference between that and their "service" was a stamp in the book and a number of "check...."
Got my oil change, for less than the price I could buy the oil and filter, and they did the checks anyway.
Net result I needed back shoes and 3 tyres.
Needless to say, same shoes and tyres are on the car some 7 months later and looking/performing fine.

Then they should say so, rather than just as the OP suggested they refused to change the pads only. If it is unsafe to drive away that is one thing, but if the discs will not last the 12,000 miles the pads will, they are hardly in need of urgent change, are they ?

If you do have an inch of corrosion then that's probably about half of the swept area of the disc that hasn't been touched by the pad. Unless the fault has arisen very recently then fitting new pads will not cure the problem a the disc will now not be flat enough for the pads to bed to correctly.
Post up a pic of the disc and we'll be able to tell better whether KF are being over-zealous or if you've been driving round with only half your rear brakes working
