Hi,

Looking to change the rears on my car at the moment. Does anyone have any recommendations for what to buy? Online reviews seem to vary quite a bit.

Tyre size is 205/45/17

Possibly looking at:

Toyo T1-R
P-Zero Nero
Uniroyal Rainsport 2.

I've read the Evo tyre test, but quite a few manufacturers a were excluded.

Thanks in advance,

Teebs

I haven't heard of anyone liking the Neros on anything as light as an MX5. My missus has the Rainsports on her Megane and they are poor in wet conditions (which is a bit of a surprise!).

I had Toyos on my Mk1 and they were a good tyre, good grip but not too much. The RE050s that came on my 3.5 are amazing - mega grip, so much so it's difficult to get it sideways in the dry. They're not cheap though!

Thanks for that. I think it will be the Toyo's, I can get 2 x rears fitted for £185.

I liked them on mine!
I've just replaced the rears with Federal SS 595s and am really not enjoying them at the moment. They are dreadful! frown

Ok, there is one wink

Federal 595 RSR are recommended by Mazda on Track for track use, not so sure about the SS.

They are st.
I'm going to have a play with the pressures but the car feels all over the place, no confidence in it all. I'm hoping either getting rid of some of the tread will help, or the pressures.
If not I will not enjoy them. frown

The Pirellis on the other hand were very nice. I thoroughly enjoyed them, dry weather grip was superb.

Yes, you can. About £40 per tyre more expensive though.

Uniroyals are what I chose - very happy with them, too, including in the rain... Just ever so slightly squealy in the dry.

Buy from tyremen and add a tenner a corner for fitting - about 164 or so.

I run the PE2's on mine & yes they are £40 more each.
But they are worth it, after all cheap compared to binning it wink.
Also cheap rubber spoils your fun wet & dry biggrin

They get great reviews everywhere, yours is the first bad review I've heard - I have them on my Merc and they're great in the wet, and in the dry the traction control light flickers much less than when I had Michelin PS2s on.

I have T1-Rs on my '5. The previous owner rated them and when they needed replacing I put a new set on. They work well with the car, IMO.

Which is why I said it was a surprise. I think the old Megane Coupe Sport is just poor in the wet. Despite being fwd it seems to have poor traction and is easy to wheelspin even on dry roads and it's only a 1.6 16v.

I had PE2 on my old Mk1. I was very disappointed after having Bridgestone S02/S03, F1 GSD2/3 as they just felt too soft & squidgy/ They seemed to have enough grip but needed to move a bit before they would grip which made them feel less confident. Probably feel fine if you've never tried stiffer tyres though.

i'm almost certainly going from T1R's to PE2's so i'll report back on those. T1R's i find reasonable for the price, but an average performer.

Where did you order them from, and how much?? My mate is after a full set for his Mk3. Cheers.

Camskill are about as cheap as you will find as long as you have somewhere that will not fleece you for fitting.
