Dad has just got himself a 42" Full-HD Panny as his 10 year service award, and bought himself a decent spec amp, speaker and Blu-ray package. This is the first full-HD TV anyone in the family will have had and the big unveiling is due to take place this weekend so I want to get him something (film/documentary wise) that will look amazing on the screen - anyone have some recommendations?

Planet Earth series and Batman Dark Knight also get my vote. Best footage I've seen to date to get that blue ray experience.

Yeah Planet Earth was my first thought as well; think that's a winner to be honest. Is Band of Brothers out on blu-ray? We loved the original; iirc the hd-version got a good write up (for it's picture/detail etc)...

BOB is disappointing, it was made for DVD but on Bluray the scenes in the snow look terrible, the sound is awesome though!

Easy answer - a Pixar film*

  • other makers are available.
Shops etc use cartoon movies etc to show off the quality of the TV and the blue-ray..

What about Terminator Salvation?

I did think of a Pixar film as well, but it's not my dads thing; if only "a car is reborn" was on blu-ray, then I wouldn't have an issue hehe

So a doc or war film is the best bet, just gotta find a decent one.

Cheers for all the suggestions so far thumbup

Brilliant remaster. You can count the threads on the red tunics.

Wall-E is supposed to be amazing on Blu-Ray - I've got the same quandry - 50" Panny arrives tonight with some big eff-off speakers.

I watched the Hurt Locker last week on cable, but enjoyed it, so maybe that's worth getting. The Dark Knight is great on Blu-Ray.

2012 and Ironman 1 and 2 look pretty awesome too.

So far out of mine I've been most impressed with Starship Troopers.

Avoid Ronin, great film, lousy bluray.

Baraka - 70mm scanned in 8k goodness on a Blu-ray. Probably the ultimate PQ available on a home format disc.

Wizard Of Oz - again another high-res scan makes this 1939 classic one of the best looking films ever released on a home format.

Pinocchio - absolutely jaw-droppingly beautiful restoration of this 70 year old animated classic. Cars/Toy Story and all the other modern digital animations are just pale imitations of the Disney classics.
