Oh, thought it was £1100 for the car.....

That's a lot of wedge to spend on a 8 year old diesel focus - main dealer quote?

I thought the £1100 was to buy the car, not repair it!

I wouldn't throw that sort of money a car that's probably only worth £500 more.

Sounds about right if its a new turbo and a garage is fitting it (time for this may vary). Turbos can be reconditioned though for a lot less (usually £200+) so might be worth going down this avenue.

Car has 110000 miles on but in very good condition. Not a main dealer quote, and apparently its beyond reconditioning. Worth about £2k I guess.

What he said.

Try get it reconditioned, or get a local mechanic to do it and buy a second-hand turbo from a breakers.

On an 8 year old focus no it's not reasonable. More than the car is worth! Go to a scrappy and get the turbo and get your local back street motors garage to do it.

From a Ford dealer though, the quote is fair. About £850-£900 for the turbo I think?

I'd bulldoze the customer into going for the refurb to be honest - best way!

I'm no expert but would it not be cheaper to buy an engine from a breaker's yard and get it transplanted in?

He doesn't want to risk a used turbo, and the engine is peachy it would be a shame to get rid of it.

i wouldnt spend 1100 repair on a car worth about 2k max. a recon turbo should have a warranty which the old can be taken in part ex which. i would say that will be less than half on the 1100.

yes a new turbo should give peace of mind but how long is he going to keep the car for?

Then all the service history, maintenance schedule etc becomes redundant.

He is going to keep it for 2 or 3 more years and put about 40-50k on it. He wants a new turbo. Funny thing is he mocks my E39 528 for its lack of feedback, economy and comfort, yet he has now spent more than double on keeping his on the road than mine and it sounds like a tractor. Even factoring in fuel consumption my car has been more financially economic.
