Ladies and Gents
Any ideas where I can read some info on buying pearls ?
I'm thinking of buying my OH a pearl necklace (as in a string of pearls) and don't know what to make of the various options, freshwater vs Akoya etc etc.

So for example is this a bargain -

Thanks for any help you can provide.

MODS: I figured this was about the most appropriate forum for this.

I just bought a matching set of necklace and earrings for my wife. Have a look here for a bit of info: http://www.pearlsofjoy.com/Types-Of-Pearls_ep_47-1... (I don't know anything about that company, but found their info fairly straight forward).

But generally, Akoya pearls will be closer to perfectly round and have a more crisp shine. The freshwater pearls are usually slightly drop shaped and come in more creamy colours. I prefer the look of them personally because they look more natural to me, but Akoya are pricier because of their more perfect shape.

The necklace you posted is expensive even at the reduced price for pearls of that size. At that price you should be looking at something approaching 8mm, although anything above that will be into the thousands.
