Despite the pants fuel economy I am considering a new Focus ST. My commuting speed is an almost constant 60mph which is very economical in my current oil burner. My question is at what speed in 6th gear does the turbo start to spool up in the ST? Will I be able to pootle along off boost and get something like 35mpg? I know 35mpg probably sounds ambitious, but I am extremely good at hypermiling.

Before anyone says don't buy an ST if you want good mpg I need to point out that I have constructed a pretty comprehensive spreadsheet of purchase prices and running costs and for my circumstances an ST with big discount gets very close to something monumentally dull, but necessarily more expensive.

Many thanks.

In my ST 70-75 is off boost on a flat road. At about 80 or so you see a little bit of boost.

That said however, I've had 30mpg out of mine at an indicated 80mph on a 300 mile trip..

Driving with the revs at 3k (ill let you work out what that speed is) on a mapped ST ive still able to return 35mpg on a motorway journey. However when it comes to more urban driving, or country roads etc it quickly falls to around 24/25mpg

On a recent trip from Birmingham to Devon I stuck to between 60 and 65mph in my ST (with Mountune upgrade) and averaged 32mpg with the highest mpg reading 34.5 before i headed off the motorway onto the A roads etc. If the turbo was spooling it wasn't showing on the gauge at those speeds.

On the way back i stuck to 80 ish! with plenty of full throttle moments on the way to the motorway to get past slow moving traffic and still managed an average 30mpg on 95 octane fuel as i couldnt get any super unleaded where i was.

All in i was impressed with the fact i could get 34mpg out of the lump as i get about 18-19mpg in the (albeit short) commute.

My standard ST has returned 34.8mpg for a 100 mile trip, mind you was VERY careful driving!
