How desperate are car dealers at the moment?

I have seen some statistics on the news recently that show new car sales are WAY down on this time last year. These numbers are obviously skewed by last year's scrappage scheme, but are dealers now desperate for sales? If they are, would some of you mind sharing how much you managed to negotiate off the list price? I'm in the market for something practical around £20k, but I'm sure others would be interested in discounts achieved on cars at different price points.
On the same theme, what do we think will happen when VAT goes up to 20% in January? Do we think that dealers will absorb the tax rise and offer even better deals to get people back in the showroom or are they already at the limit of their discounting resulting in the buyer having to cough up for the extra VAT?

Perhaps I ought to clarify that I am looking for a new car. I'm not surprised there is shortage of low mileage used stuff because there is no NEED to change these cars, only a desire to get something different. Given the lack of cash around at the moment I think a lot of people have to put their desires on the back burner.

I've seen the Skoda and SEAT deals. Good as they are I just don't think I can cope with telling people what I drive. I already have to justify my diesel, but a Skoda is just too much. Sorry to Skoda owners.

Has anyone managed to get a monumental deal on a Ford recently? I'm talking 25% off, say a Focus, which will replaced next summer?

Well, if people aren't buying NEW cars that's hardly surprising.As you and I know, and contrary to PH wisdom, the motor trade has rarely been "easy". These recent years have been very difficult and it's hard to see where it's headed.

Skoda actually, up 73%. And there's a massive waiting list and demand for most models. A Yeti is into the middle of next year, and there's also long lead times on many Octavia/Fabia variants too. Which is strange seeing as how they're giving them away. I'm sure their prices are proving popular with people on a budget too.

It's like the the Cool Wall - "what do you drive?", "a Skoda Murcielago". People don't hear Murcielago because they already made up their mind when you said Skoda.

You can buy a new Skoda Octavia VRS TDI estate which would list at around £22,000 for £16,900 at the moment (Dealer will do a discount and the Skoda UK will pay the VAT). Bargain for a 170hp diesel estate car!! And that's with a 50% deposit and 2 years interest free credit!
