Lotus goes Black & Gold

I don't want to take all the credit here - but I did take Tony Fernandez aside last November and made it clear that Black & Gold was the livery that they should be using.
( I really did bend his ear about it ) and also had creative meetings with Lotus discussing it as well. Shame we didn't get the work !

BLACK & GOLD - THE EVOLUTION OF LOTUS RACING
Hingham, UK - 11th November 2010
In a move that is certain to excite Lotus fans and followers of Formula One™ around the world, Lotus Racing has announced this morning that its cars will be running in a black and gold colour scheme from the 2011 Championship onwards. This move echoes the evolution of Lotus Formula One™ cars of the past by moving from the iconic green and yellow paint scheme of the first season to the much loved black and gold.
Lotus Racing has already won an army of fans worldwide whose support for the Anglo-Malaysian squad has been fuelled by the team’s open, honest approach to racing, and its efforts on track which has seen the team edge ever closer to securing the ‘best of the new teams’ title in its debut season.
To bring the fans even closer to the team in its second season Head of Marketing Silvi Schaumloeffel today explained how the 2011 livery will be designed: “We have worked all year to make sure our fans are given unprecedented access to our team. We are all very excited about the move to a black and gold paint scheme for next season, and we want our fans to help us design the livery that will be racing around the world next year. We will shortly be announcing exactly how the fans can take part in our design process, so keep an eye on our website www.lotusracing.my for more details. The person who designs the livery we finally choose will be joining us at our first test next year to see the car out on track for the very first time, so for Lotus and F1™ fans it is the chance of a lifetime to help us take the next step forward in our amazing story in 2011.”
Riad Asmat, Lotus Racing Chief Executive, added his thoughts on the next step in the Lotus Racing story: “When we first unveiled our 2010 car there was unanimous praise for our decision to bring the historic green and yellow livery back to the modern F1™ grid. I know the return to the track of the legendary black and gold will be met with even more universal support as it strikes such an emotional chord with fans around the world. Giving those fans the chance to help us bring it back to the contemporary grid is true to our core belief of putting our supporters right at the heart of Lotus Racing – we can’t wait to show the world what we come up with!”

that doesn't sound like they are going to roll over in from of a Renault/Lotus Group tie up!I wild stab at this is to distance itself further from 'Lotus Cars' but keeping the links with a colour scheme that is associated with the 'Classic' Team Lotus.
I'd guess this is all due to thrashing out the small-print on the legal stuff between T.F and 'Lotus Cars'.
Will be nice to see. I've always thought it the best colour scheme in the business.

Indeed. JPS didn't only sponsor Lotus, but also BMW, Norton and even boats.black & gold = cigarette sponsorship

I remember when it first came out. It looked tremendous. It put Lotus in the vanguard of design. They tried to rename the car John Player Special but it never caught on. Some say because of the reluctance of the media to give free advertising.
But when think of Andretti I think of JPS colours so it worked.
I like the current green and yellow - takes me back a few weeks - but I can see the reasoning behind the black and gold.
The Gold Leaf livery looked good in magazines but I felt it looked naff on the circuit. So when the JPS colours came out it was a vast improvement.
The only think I'd say about the black/gold colours was that those fans who went for corporate clothing looked rather silly. I remember a family group in JPS clothing at, I think, the 75 British GP seeming very sad.

what so ferrari can't have a white barcode on their car because it makes people think of marlboro cigarettes but we can paint a car in black and gold, the definitive JPS colours, and that's ok?

It's a pity sponsors colours rule F1. I'd much prefer team running their own colours with sponsors on top. A nice Orange McLaren would be cool, though to me they were always red and white.
I guess for 2010 we're not too far off though - Ferrari, Lotus and Mercedes in their traditional colours.

I am exactly the same. But it is kind of cool. I say Rothmans and you'll hopefully think Williams Renault and Porsche 956. I say Camel and you'll also think Lotus and lots of stuck Land Rovers. For years tobacco paid for motorsport and all the best liveries in history are tobacco.Marlboro

Lotus ran this year as Lotus under a license from Lotus, but in Singapore Lotus announced that next year it would be changing its name from Lotus to Lotus. This news was immediately met with a statement from Lotus which said that it had the rights to use the Lotus name and that Lotus did not, so Lotus could not change its name from Lotus to Lotus.
Next season Lotus will not allow Lotus to call itself Lotus because Lotus wants to do a deal to take over Renault and call it Lotus so Lotus will have to call itself something else other than Lotus.
Lotus will also take a stake at ART in GP2 to create ART Lotus so the team set up by the guys running Lotus who won’t be able to call their teams Lotus next year will have to call their GP2 team Air Asia.
