The ruling means substantial damages claims now likely to be made by Mr Morris’ loved ones can only be launched against the Motor Insurers Bureau, the industry body that compensates victims of uninsured drivers.

Chap killed when flung from the car.

Did he have a seatbelt on? If so that's terrible news. If not then maybe it's a lesson in the use of them?

Bad news all round, especially with a death.

Mother was an idiot, who will now lose her home.

She was fronting, and the mods were massive and undeclared.

Zero sympathy.

Is this news/sobering? Everyone on PH must know by now that if you don't declare mods then expect the worst. You know that bit you sign/click as agreement that all information provided to the insurance company is true to the best of your knowledge... it isn't just for sts and giggles.

I should think there are thousands of cars being driven with the same status. Maybe she didn't know it hadn't originally come with alloys or that it was lowered. She probably fronted in good faith. To say you hope she loses her house is hardly fair.

Oh please.

She insured a modded car for her son in her name.

She knew EXACTLY what she was doing.

Oh I didn't realise you knew the lady? Strong assumptions you are making.

I'd be curious to know how many people have bought a car with a VAG 1.8t engine, not knowing that it has been chipped, and have declared 'no modifications'.

She may well ahve been fronting (which IMHO isnt the worst thing in the world) but in her defence, my mother certainly wouldn't have a clue about whether a car was modified or not so perhaps this lady was simply unaware?

You're probably overestimating the average person's intelligence and his/her appreciation of how bad the consequences of fronting can be.

Never underestimate the ignorance of people. She could have been sold down the river by her son.

Why is this "a sobering tale for owners of 'modded' cars"?

Surely this is a sobering tale for people who commit insurance fraud? rolleyes

It's the whole culture of insuring kids cars in the parent's name that they are trying to get rid of.

It's been done so much that no one even realises they are playing the system.

I'll say at least 60% of young drivers are insured on parents policy
