I have been asked to complete a self assessment tax return due to me wanting to claim tax relief on my business miles. however, due to me exceeding the limit allowed for on a P87, HMRC want me to do a self assessment instead

the P87 form is pretty straightforward, and in fact, i have alrady completed this with the relevant £figure to show how much i would like to claim tax back on. i also have all the mileage records etc

my problem is, its not very clear which part of the self assessment i need to complete, or insert this value into.

all i have been able to get out of HMRC is that i need the "pink" "employment" form, which i have. still dont know which box to complete though

any help, greatly appreciated

If you need to complete a self assessment return then you will need to complete the main return and any relevant supplmentary pages. One set of these will be the employment pages. The mileage claim goes in box 17 on page E1.
