Does Nikon D700 have wireless flash trigger?

Does the Nikon D700 have an in-built IR emitter to trigger an external flash unit?
Or does it require a cable to the flash unit?

I know the flash unit itself has a wireless trigger so that it can initiate other flash units, but can the D700 do this without a cable?

I don't think it has an infra-red trigger, but the in-built flash can trigger other Nikon flashguns.

Not IR no. It uses a pre-flash to trigger CLS flashes.

I assume you mean triggering a studio flash. This can be done in three ways

PC Sync cable - falls out, a trip hazzard and a PITA

Hot shoe mounted wireless trigger - chinese ones are great but don't work with all studio flash makes or I should say Interfit doesn't!

put the prism mounted flashgun on manual, turn it right down [so it doesn't interfere] and as it flashes it will trigger a studio head. This will also work with a hot shoe mounted flash too. Also, using [Nikon] CLS this [Nikon] flashgun can be put anywhere off camera and thus big distances between the camera and studio flash can be achieved.

Let me know if you want detailed info about triggering studio or Nikon flashes or using both at the same time.

Its for my girlfriend's camera, she has just bought this speedflash :

She is trying to get in to photography (well, so am I really), and just wondering if the D700 camera can trigger the above flash unit without the need for cables and also without any other purchases?

Or are we likely to need to buy a wireless sender plugged in to the camera so that it can trigger the speed flash?

Short answer is yes, depending on the body. You mention D700 there, and it has it on that webpage but thats the spec for the SB900 flash unit rather than the camera body.

Some bodies dont have CLS, which is where you put the popup flash (or SB800/900/othercontroller) into Commander mode and set the SB900 to be a slave. Check out Nikon CLS and anything by Joe McNally on it. Whenever I've tried it outdoors the results have been variable, intruth it's not worked more times than it has worked, but thats the limitation of IR.

Other options would be remote triggers or an off camera cord (SC-29 as an example)

As mentioned above, yes, the D700 can trigger that Nikon flashgun using it's own in-built flash.
