Picking up a car tomorrow from a dealer. He only has the small green tear out bit of the v5, is this normal or would you expect to see the whole thing?

The motor trader should have the whole v5 minus the motor trader section, which is about 1/4 of the second page at the top.

You keep the small green part if you have just purchased the car privately, whilst the seller sends the rest to the DVLA.

ok thanks, is it wise to wait for the dealer to have the rest of the v5, or is it being over cautious?

Unless the dealer has registered the car, or the previous owner is sending it on, it is very unlikely that he will be receiving a full V5

You are being over cautious imo.

I should have also added they have had it in stock less than two weeks.

So how will the DVLA get notified of the change in keeper?

Certainly not usual.

I would want to see the whole thing or hear a very good reason why not.

I would accept a written confirmation of No. of owners etc if it was a big dealer but would walk from anywhere dodgy.

Wait until you see the whole thing. It depends on what car it is but i would want to make sure it is what it is supposed to be. Also get them to show you a full HPI report and note the number of owners etc.

It is possible to get another V5 but any trader knows he should have the V5 - ask him/her where it is and why they dont have it.

If dealer doesnt have the full document then he wont be able to put the car into your name....ask why he doesnt have the complete V5.

Thanks, here's the thing. The claimed reason is that the previous owner is taking a cherished plate off and are waiting for the documents to come through. However the current tax disc has the current plate on it and so does the last MOT in Feb. Also an RAC check shows no plate transfers.

Sounds a wee bit ropey to me. Is this car amazing and exactly what you want? If so hold on for him to get the full V5 if not i'd walk.

when a transfer is done at a DVLA local office, a "new" tax disc (ie the existing tax transferred on to the replacement reg no)and revised MOT with "new" old reg is posted to the garage fairly promptly. The car will then have a tax disc in its "new" old reg and plates can be fitted. The V5 however, takes longer to process and is usually sent to previous keeper's address and they are seldom that rapid in forwarding to the dealer... Consequently you have a car with a valid tax disc, correct plates, and a green slip of V5 but no full V5 - that's at either at or on its way to the previous owner. This is a fairly typical situation...

If you check at the bottom of the tax disc, the issued date will be printed, this should correspond to when the plate was taken off, also MOT will show it has been re-issued at "dvla....". If thats the case, then it would be fine and from a dealer I would not worry at all, its a common problem for the dealers when a car comes in and is having a plate transfer.

I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as it is a legit dealer. The V5 isn't anything to do with ownership anyway (something which the new ones have splattered in huge type across the front).

In the case of a plate change it does take time - the V5 follows the other paperwork sometime afterwards and it will come from the DVLA in Swansea to the last owner who should then forward it on.

I'd get the dealer to declare on the invoice that V5 is to follow. If the last owner does not forward it on then the dealer will have to fill in a V62 in your name (and pay £25) to get the car registered in your name.

The only case in which it might cause issues is if the car's tax is due to run out in the next month or so as you may not have all the paperwork back to tax it in time.

Yeah that's the next problem, it expires at the end of the month.
