Seems like most people have been scared from last years winter and many more have decided to use winter tyres. Just went onto a few websites where I usually get tyres from and they've sold out!!! Although I cant really afford them just now i'm going to make an effort to get some on.

Is there a noticable difference from getting big branded snow tyres and budget snow tyres?

Depending on what size you want you may have to wait till stocks are filled up again - if they get more stock in time to make it worth while for you.

I intended on getting mine beggining of October when there were plenty about and lots of choice, Wednesday night I finally got round to ordering some only to find out that no where had any in stock in the size I wanted.

After about an hour I found this site http://www.tyremen.co.uk/, had the size I wanted 205/50/16 and ordered them straight away (Hankook W310 i-cept), they arrived this morning.

All the well known site's I tried had no stock, think you may have to phone around and ask when/if they are planning to get more in and possibly pre-order.

Buy some snow socks. Keep them in the boot.

Hmmm... a further check into bank balance has indicated that i shouldnt be able to afford winter tyres till start of december. frown I'll get something ordered before then.

Camskill were expecting Vredestein to deliver to them in late November/Early December last time I contacted them. Drop them an email with your requirements and get something back-ordered if the price is right - then you can avoid paying for them for a few more weeks.

I saw a mention elsewhere that (say it quietly) Quickfit had a really good deal on Continental winter tyres which are usually towards the top of most winter tyre reviews, no idea what the deal is but might be worth looking into.

Pretty much. Don't drive with them on bare tarmac. They're for those occasions where you're faced with a road packed with snow and ice, on which you won't be able to drive. Snow socks will let you do that. Don't be under any illusion however that you'll suddenly be driving up 45' inclines.
