Thinking of buying a BMW Z4 2.2 or Audi TT 1.8(180BHP) Quattro. The year will be around 2004, so it would be the old model. The car will be for my wife. I realise the Audi is 4 wheel drive, but other than that, what are your opinions on which one to but. Anything we should be aware of.

haven't driven either but i'd definitely go for the z4, looks better, and it's bound to be better to drive. been in tt's before and didn't think much of the interior.

I'd have the Z4 myself but for the OH get the TT it's much more forgiving and cheaper replace kerbed wheels and trim pannels for.

Audi! unless she wants to drive it like she stole it the Audi is the best all rounder. The Z4 interior is also dire.

If she likes driving then get the Z4, if she wants to go posing then still the Z4.

Why the 180 and not the 225? I suppose the cost to buy and insure is less but I think that I would always regret buying a lesser powered car.

The 180 BHP was one that we saw and tried. It was quicker than the 2.2 Z4. The 225 would be quicker still I know.

I have a Z4 on a 53 plate and love it. Had it for 2 years and will keep it until i can afford a 911 turbo, so probably for quite a long time! Mine is a 3.0i and engine sounds great, plenty of low rev torque. I definitely recommend this engine, trouble is you'd want to borrow your wife's car all the time!

So what, I know my car is not the fastest thing in the world, but they're a nice cruiser even if you're used to tvr power. I've had faster cars like skyline R32, sierra cosworth but the Z4 is still a really nice drive.

We've owned both. Both are good cars, generally reliable etc. She'll be safer in the TT with it's 4WD. Get the 225/3.0 models to make them easier to sell on. Plenty will say a 2.2/2.5 Z4 is fast but they're just making excuses. On the BMW get Xenons too. The TT is much more loaded in 225 guise too.

Which does she prefer? What colour does she like (may be influencing factor).

I'd say the Z4 in general, but you're looking at the wrong models. The 2.2 can feel a bit gutless and pretty much returns the same economy as the 2.5 and 3.0, whilst the 225 is noticeably perkier than the 180 TT. IMO you should be looking at Z4 3.0 (or perhaps a 2.5) and TT 225. Are your choices dictated by budget?

TT hands down, looks much better inside and out. Cheaper to run a no brainer really PS the Z4 has a hoffificly boring/cheap interior.

Z4, I love them. My son drives a 3.0 Z4, we went through all the obvious competitors, boxter, S2000, XK8, SLK, etc. but chose the Z4 because it was ahead of the others in so many ways. Completely unpretentious, just a great drive and a nice place to be. We never tried the TT, I'm sure it's a good car but the city boy image spoils it, looks like a fashion accessory not a sports car
