Clonking noise on full lock
Discussion
Every morning when I pull out of my parking space- steering on full lock turning to the left, I get a clonking noise and vibration, just til I take it out of full lock,
it's been in the garage for a couple of days having thermostat fitted and levels checked so got them to look at it
They can't find anything wrong with it at all
Anyone had this before? If so what is it?

Worse when reversing on full-lock? Are your tyres nearing the end of their life?
It's nothing to worry about, it happens to a lot of them. It's the power steering pump and it won't do any harm as long as you limit how much you do it - you shouldn't really keep it at full-lock any longer than you have to in any PAS car.
It can usually be improved with a good geometry but usually only goes away with new tyres.

Dont diffs clonk at full lock? Alternatively, doesnt that mean a wheel bearing is going?
No and no. Not on MX5s anyway.missdiane said:
So...
the car has now started doing it on less than full lock, both sides, clonking noise and vibration, garage had a look and although knows what the issue was they couldn't find anything.
It still worries me
What condition are your tyres in and what tyre pressure do you have?the car has now started doing it on less than full lock, both sides, clonking noise and vibration, garage had a look and although knows what the issue was they couldn't find anything.

3-4 mm from the min line on the front, pressures are OK, just come out the garage and they checked them there- needed doing but no change on clonk since garage.
I read your post above, seems funny that a noise like that would just be tyres- such a simple fix, it needs MOT in Feb so they may want doing

Getting the alignment done properly might help it a bit. Probably won't cure it though as some are just more susceptible to this than others. My old Mk1 always did this from new when the tyres got beyond half-worn and got worse as they got more worn. Getting correct alignment helped a bit and it always went away with new tyres.
My current 9 year old Mk2.5 never does it.
