Stalling problem

Over the last couple of weeks my 4.0 Chim (1999) has started stalling when I come to a stop at roundabouts and traffic lights. It happens as i am slowing and have just depressed the clutch for the last time to stop. I took the stepper motor out yesterday and cleaned it (very dirty) but the car still did it to me this morning.
It will get rather emabarressing soon as i also have a problem with my starter motor sometimes sticking when warm and not allowing me to turn the engine over. I then have to wait for it to cool (all this despite a heat sheild being fitted last year). Anybody got any ideas on either or both problems? Thanks in advance.

You could check the voltage across the throttle potentiometer. If this is incorrect, the ECU won't know when you've taken your foot of the gas and take over idle control.
Or, maybe the rev sensor is faulty and the ECU can't tell when the speed has dropped below idle.
Not sure if these theories are correct but it's my best shot.

Thanks for your replies. I did clean the threads and inside the housing of the stepper motor. I drive the car to work every day and no stalling today so I am living in hope that the problem had cleared itself!!

did the steppper still have the fibre washer on it ? if not this alters the length of the stepper cone - could this cause it - it did on mine ?

I didnt see a fibre washer...which bit should it be on?

Right now i'm fed up!! I have:
1) Cleaned the stepper motor
2) Replaced the SNB802 water temperature sender
3) Replaced the spark plugs

And still when i depress the clutch the revs sometimes (quite rarely) drop to about 2-300 rpm and the engine sometimes dies. Any other ideas i can try. Cheers!!

Try re-setting the ECU ! I had the same problem for a while, cleaned the stepper motor etc but problem persisted. Thought it might have been dodgy fuel but tried re-setting the ECU to default settings and that sorted it.

Doing this can be a short term fix only ! If a sender is faulty and sending duff info to the ECU which, given time, will re-adapt and produce the same old problem......but....it worked for me..

mine done the same it was the speed sensor unit which is under the dash

I had it to - Intermitent cutting out etc. Turns out it was the imboliser, Disabling it has worked but only done 200 miles since, time will tell, it is running beter than before, check out my previous posts to understand my frustrastion - it takes a lot for me to put pen to paper, so to speak.

Cheers for the replies guys...my thoughts having looked in the Bible are with Chim 500's idea as my speedo is not working either. Only problem is that the speedo has not been working for some time and this stalling problem hasn't!!

For what its worth, you could spend weeks looking for the problem and replace alot of good sensors etc in the process. It would probably save alot of time if not money if you took the car to someone who knows the V8 engine and the TVR ingition set up.

Austec and Mark Adams spring to mind, along with TVR power and V8 Developments. As you can see from the replies above it could be any number of things and these guys should be able to find the problem quickly.

My 4.0l used to do this, more often if it was on the hot side. Turned out to be just the base idle was set a little low.

I went down the same route as you with regard to changing many items when all it needed was somebody with the right know how to adjust a screw!

FWIW I once had exactly these same symptoms with my Discovery, the dealer fixed it by resealing the plenum (known problem they said). I was a little sceptical but it worked a treat.

When you come to traffic lights and roundabouts what gear are you in when finally push the clutch down, Is it 4th or 5th gear ?, If so try changing down the gears before getting to the roundabout or lights to about 2nd gear or 1st this will prevent the engine from labouring which could cause it to flood and cut out.

I've got exactly the same problem with my 95 4L chim. My speedo does not work for the first 10-15mins when I go out in it (or until the car is warm), during this time the car will stall, sometimes, when I approach lights etc.
The strange thing is once the speedo starts to work the car does not or should I say has not stalled...yet!!

Please let me know how you get on.....

To me this indicates that it is your road speed sensor not working when the speedo fails. This sensor (on the diff) send a signal to both the speedo and the ECU. When you come to a halt the ECU doesn't know this and the fuelling is wrong, and you stall. Restarting resets the fuelling messages from the ECU (i.e. it provides the fuel map for tickover).
