Washing machine has just died. What is the best cheap washing machine out there. By cheap I mean under £350.
Thanks in advance.

I bought a Beko as a stand in about 5 years ago and its still going strong with no issues at all.The all singing all dancing £600 Hotpoint i'd had before was on its fourth repair in the same period. The Beko was about £220 back then from Comet delivered and installed...

Hotpoint, Indisit and Ariston are probably best avoided. Even more so if you are looking at washer dryers.

How did it die?
Mine has had a new belt, pump, inlet valve and heater: but still going strong (since 1990) wink

Most modern washing machines have a lifetime set by the main drum bearings as replacement is usually rather invasive - some are a drum-out operation. If it was me and wasn't going to do any research into special brands I'd buy a basic model of an expensive brand, i.e. Miele or Bosch.

But the ones to really avoid are not the ones that chew their bearings in a year so much as the ones that fill your kitchen floor with water on a regular basis..

We've an 8 year old Zanussi and it's not skipped a beat. Actually, I lie - yesterday one of the plastic bracket type thingies which help tumble the clothes snapped off. Other than that it's been great. (Makes a mad grab to touch the wooden table.)

It's electrical. Gave up the ghost half way through the cycle. Will not switch on any more. Tried fuses, different plugs, etc, but to no avail.

OK - possibly a main board.
You'd be surprised at the number of new boards for washing machines etc on eBay, if you are tempted also use Google as eBay prices are not always competitive. That also depends on your time and ability to problem solve of course wink

Forums are quite useful too - type in your make, model and symptom into Google and see what others have found - some are common faults cheaply fixed.

You would also love to query the designers who put main boards down next to water pipes or drains so if anything leaks the board is fked. Surely if you are designing something with water, electric and vibrations you aim to keep the electrical bits well above the wet bits.

You can get a John Lewis machine delivered for £350.

These are great and are made by Electrolux/AEG I am told.

I've just bought one of these - http://www.comet.co.uk/p/Washing-Machines/buy-SAMS... - much better than the Indisit it replaced.

Also, agreed that the John Lewis 'own brand' ones are very good - and come with a 3 yr+ warranty.

Just go for the longest (free) warranty available, JL is 3 years, LG seems to be 10 (see above post), other top-end manufacturers like Miele and Siemens often have offers on, look out for one, especially as we are in the run up to xmas.

Idiot point but worth considering if you are using the washing machine also check it has the programs you want, buying the highly recommended bottom end Bosch (which was also recomended to us) is fine but if you need a delayed start function or a specific wash cycle and it isn't there then you may be better off with the 4star option that has the features. If it is so you can tick the washer present box then get the cheapest recommended one.
