Hi guys

Hope you aren't too bored of all the threads with how much people have to spend, and what you can recommend. smile Here's another...

I've had a few petrol turbocharged cars in the past, and now I'm saving my monies, so want to rid myself of sports cars and go to something with massive MPG.

I want something as cheap as possible to buy, and run (cheap parts and servicing), that will return as high MPG as I can get away with. I'm guessing a low tax bracket diesel will be up my street?

Being used to sports cars, I like something that handles well, but realise I can't have everything. As I would like to keep the purchase price as low as possible, approximately £1500, what would you guys recommend?

Also, please take into account the age of the car, as I would like it to last as long as possible. I'm thinking the lower the mileage, in theory, the less major work that will need done.

From looking around, I've been thinking something either VAG diesel or Peugeot 206 1.4 HDI. I don't want anything too big as I don't need the space. I don't care about brand names.

So guys, what do you recommend? If you could post me some examples, that would be awesome, otherwise just some makes/models/years of cars you think would be in my price bracket. If you don't think I can have all of the above in my price range, what would I need to be spending?

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest a Phase 3 Peugeot 306 Meridian HDi. I recently sold my wife's 2000 X plate for £1350.

We got 55-65mpg, the car handled ok and was peanuts to tax and insure. We kept it well serviced and apart from having to replace the aircon pipes behind the radiator (a very common issue) it was as good as gold for the 5 years we owned it.

There's loads around so finding a good one shouldn't be too tricky.
